CURRENT AFFAIRS OF 8th JUNE, 2023

  1. World Oceans Day is annually observed on 8 June to create awareness about the importance of oceans, a life source which play in sustaining life on Earth. The theme of World Oceans day 2023 is “Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing”. 
  2. World Brain Tumour Day is annually observed on 8 June across the globe with the intent of increasing public awareness about brain tumours, and the importance of early detection and timely treatment, as well as provide support to affected individuals. The theme of World Brain Tumour Day 2023 is “Protect yourself-keep away from stress”.
  3. The Tata Group has retained its title of India’s most valuable brand, achieving a brand value of $26.4 billion. This is the first time an Indian brand has surpassed the $25 billion mark, placing Tata in the top 100 of the Brand Finance Global 500 2023 rankings.  
  4. The Government has officially announced that Atul Verma’s tenure as the Director General of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has been extended for a period of three months.
  5. Germany is preparing to host the biggest air deployment exercise in NATO’s history, the Air Defender 23 exercise which will take place from 12-23 June, 2023 and 10,000 participants and 250 aircraft from 25 nations will take part in the exercise.
  6. BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda released a book titled ‘Amrutkaal Ki Ore’ in New Delhi based on nine years’ achievements of the Narendra Modi Government.
  7. Five countries have been elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council following a vote in the General Assembly on 6 June, 2023. Algeria, Guyana, Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia will join the premier body for maintaining international peace and security, starting from 1 January 2024, serving for a two-year period.
  8. Kerala has secured the first position in the fifth national State Food Safety Index of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
  9. Siddharth Choudhary clinches gold medal in men’s shot put event of U-20 Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea.
  10. Indian Navy divers and Marine Commandos are in the Maldives for the sixth edition of Exercise ‘Ekatha’ with Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) from 4 June to 3 July, 2023.
  11. Haryana will launch a special campaign to raise awareness about door-to-door waste collection and segregation.
  12. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) initiated a pilot programme in collaboration with Ashok Leyland and Hero Motocorp to test the effectiveness of the ED7 fuel blend, which combines diesel with 7% ethanol.  
  13. India’s Sunil Kumar scored 7003 points and clinched gold medal in men’s decathlon at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Yecheon, South Korea on 6 June, 2023.
  14. India and the United States have taken a significant step towards deepening cooperation in high-tech trade and technology partnership. During the inaugural meeting of the India-US Strategic Trade Dialogue held in Washington D.C., the two nations agreed to establish a monitoring group to review and monitor the progress of their collaborative efforts.
  15. Indigenously designed and developed heavy-weight torpedo (HWT) Varunastra on 6 June, 2023 successfully test-fired with a live warhead against an undersea target, by the Indian Navy.
  16. Gitanjali Aiyar, one of India’s first English female news presenters on national broadcaster Doordarshan, passed away on 7 June, 2023.
